Pranic Healing vs Reiki: What's the Difference?

By Amol Joshi·July 15, 2026·5 min read

Two Paths, One Goal

Pranic Healing and Reiki are both no-touch (or light-touch) energy healing systems aimed at supporting the body's natural healing process. Because they look similar from the outside — a practitioner working near the body without physical manipulation — they're often confused. The techniques and training behind them, however, are quite different.

Origins

Pranic Healing was developed by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui, a Filipino chemical engineer and businessman, who synthesised yoga, Chinese chi kung, and other esoteric traditions into a structured system through years of research starting in the 1980s.

Reiki originated earlier, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century, rooted in Japanese spiritual and meditative traditions.

Technique

Pranic Healing relies heavily on scanning — practitioners are trained to actively sense specific areas of imbalance in the aura before applying targeted cleansing and energising protocols for that condition.

Reiki typically follows a more standardised sequence of hand positions, channeling universal life energy through the practitioner to the recipient, often with less emphasis on diagnostic scanning beforehand.

Structure and Certification

Pranic Healing courses follow a defined curriculum — Basic, Advanced, Psychotherapy, and beyond — with specific techniques taught at each level and a clear prerequisite structure.

Reiki is typically taught in three degrees (levels), with the second and third degrees focused on symbols and the ability to attune others, rather than an expanding technique library in the way Pranic Healing's course path works.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you're drawn to a structured, technique-heavy system with defined protocols for specific ailments, Pranic Healing's course path may appeal more. If you're drawn to a simpler, more meditative practice centred on attunement, Reiki may feel more natural.

Many energy practitioners are trained in both — the two systems aren't mutually exclusive, and some find the scanning skills from Pranic Healing complement their Reiki practice well.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I learn both Pranic Healing and Reiki?

Yes. Many practitioners study both systems and find the techniques complement each other, particularly Pranic Healing's scanning skills.

Is one more effective than the other?

Neither system claims to be objectively superior — they're different structured approaches to the same underlying goal, and individual experience varies.

Do both require certification to practice?

Yes. Both Pranic Healing and Reiki are typically taught through certified courses with defined levels of training.
